DUBAI levelled up the global gaming scene this May with the return of the region’s biggest celebration of interactive entertainment – the Dubai Esports and Games Festival (DEF) 2025.

In its fourth and most ambitious edition to date, the citywide spectacle attracted more than 45,000 attendees and 3.8 million gamers online, uniting fans, developers, brands, and industry leaders for 17 action-packed days.

From immersive gaming zones and high-stakes esports tournaments to industry-defining summits and youth-driven education challenges, DEF 2025 cemented Dubai’s role as a world-class hub for gaming, tech, and digital innovation.

Record participation

The event saw unprecedented engagement, drawing 3.8 million players who competed in over 90 tournaments. Popular titles such as Valorant, Fortnite, EA FC 25, Yalla Ludo, and Tekken 8 took centre stage, along with more than 130 game titles being showcased – including over 10 brand-new releases.

The flagship GameExpo event drew a record-breaking 34,800 attendees, transforming the venue into a buzzing digital playground spread across eight interactive zones. From the nostalgic Modesh Retro Zone to the cutting-edge Amazon Joy Quest IRL Zone, every area was packed with opportunities to play, discover, and win. A whopping 900 winners took home prizes from raffles totalling more than Dh700,000.

Global industry convergence

Beyond gaming thrills, DEF 2025 was a major convening ground for industry professionals. Over 2,000 delegates from 70 countries attended GameExpo Summit and Gaming Matters, two key B2B platforms hosting high-impact dialogues on Web3, AI, investment, and talent development.

The Summit featured 75+ speakers and 1,700 professionals, delivering actionable insights across nine themed tracks, alongside the newly introduced Investment Summit, spotlighting MENA’s rising appeal in the global investment ecosystem.

More than 260 SMEs in tech and gaming found visibility through showcases, while PitchPlay, hosted in partnership with DMCC Gaming Centre, awarded Dh55,000 to Filiokus by Martin Lothe Saeterdal for best start-up pitch.

Educational impact

The DEF Education Engagement Programme reached new milestones with over 16,500 students and educators from 250 UAE schools participating. From school visits with mobile Game Quest Express trucks to live on-stage challenges at Education Day, the initiative empowered the next generation with workshops, tournaments, and career-focused sessions.

Students competed for Dh50,000 in prizes across engaging challenges like the ENBD Fortnite Quest, GameOn hackathon, and the Minecraft Education Challenge. The cross-curricular Level Up Calendar helped teachers integrate gaming into learning outcomes, while the Power Up Parade offered a colourful platform for creativity.

Creator hype & cosplay brilliance

GameExpo’s Play Beyond arena hosted high-voltage showdowns led by regional stars such as AboFlah, Sultan Khalifa, and creators from Nasr Esports Academy. Fans witnessed intense face-offs, culminating in the academy claiming the Play Beyond trophy.

Meanwhile, the Dubai Cosplay Championship thrilled attendees with dazzling costumes and performances. With a Dh30,000 prize pool, standout winners included Evgenii Aleksandrov, Ahmed Serag, Sofiane Touchene, and duo Rana and Fatima Al Yousif. Judges included well-known cosplayers like @sabcosplay and @vegacosplay, making the event a regional cosplay benchmark.

High-stakes tournaments

Competitions reached fever pitch during events like the True Gamers Tournament, Red Bull matchups, and Yalla Ludo Challenge. Notably, the FC25 Dubai Cup, hosted with PlayStation, drew 31,000 participants from across the GCC. A UAE gamer took home the championship, adding a national highlight to the fest.

The all-female Valorant faceoff supported by Benefit delivered one of the festival’s most memorable showdowns. Featuring teams from Princess Noura University and University of Wollongong, the match celebrated strategic prowess and gender inclusivity in esports.

Immersive retail & hotel offers

DEF 2025 rippled through Dubai’s retail scene with exclusive promotions at 2,500+ stores across 240+ brands. Shoppers found great deals at outlets such as Virgin Megastore, LEGO, Sharaf DG, and Samsung, with interactive in-mall gaming experiences at venues like Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, and Ibn Battuta Mall.

Out-of-town visitors and professionals enjoyed 25% discounts at participating Rove Hotels, ensuring affordability and proximity to festival venues.

A powerhouse line-up of 775 brands took part in DEF 2025. From tech giants like ASUS ROG, LG, and du to lifestyle and beauty players like Benefit and Geekay, the festival proved to be a major brand engagement platform. The AI Vista Photobooth, Antifreeze - Immersionica, and exclusive Modesh merchandise giveaways added flair and excitement throughout.
